1. Introduction

The Bend deposit in Taylor County is one of Wisconsin’s most important undeveloped copper-gold deposits. A Wisconsin mineral report gives an older reserve estimate of about 2.2 million tons grading 2.77 percent copper, 0.05 ounces gold per ton, and 0.43 ounces silver per ton, equal to roughly 1.7 grams gold per metric tonne. Crandon, in Forest County, is a much larger zinc-copper-lead-silver-gold massive sulfide deposit; the Wisconsin DNR describes it as an estimated 55 million tons of ore containing zinc, copper, lead, gold, and silver. Lynne, in Oneida County, is another known nonferrous sulfide deposit, but I would avoid giving a gold-per-ton number unless a stronger primary source is in hand. [2], [7], [8]

8. Why Wisconsin Is Not Usually Called a Major Gold State

Wisconsin is not usually listed as a major gold state because its placer gold is generally fine and scattered, while much of its bedrock gold occurs as byproduct gold in polymetallic sulfide deposits. In other words, the state has gold, but not the same kind of gold-mining identity as western placer and lode districts. The economics of Wisconsin’s bedrock deposits usually depend on copper, zinc, lead, silver, and gold together. Gold may be important, but it is commonly locked in sulfides and tied to hard-rock mining, milling, environmental review, water management, and permitting.
