1. Introduction

Minnesota is a real gold state, but it has to be explained with care because its gold occurs in two very different geologic settings. The first is glacial placer gold, which means fine gold scattered by continental ice, meltwater, and later stream sorting. Older local history places gold excitement along branches of the Zumbro near Mantorville in the 1850s. The geologic explanation is not a rich local gold belt in southeastern Minnesota. The better explanation is glacial transport and stream reconcentration. Glacial drift supplied scattered heavy minerals, and the Zumbro system sorted some of them into bends, bars, riffles, and low-energy traps. This is why the Zumbro belongs in the Minnesota article as the most famous placer section, but it should be described honestly as fine-gold panning ground, not a proven commercial placer field. Modern Minnesota gold exploration has focused on northern greenstone belts, gold-in-till anomalies, and drill-tested prospects rather than placer mining.
