In practical terms, the Copper Basin proves that southeastern Tennessee’s mineral systems did contain gold, but it does not turn the old copper district into casual prospecting ground. Massive sulfide districts can include acid drainage, unstable workings, contaminated dumps, and restricted land. The correct prospecting distinction is this: Coker Creek is the main placer-gold district; Copper Basin is important for byproduct gold from sulfide copper ores.
